Directions for Success

  1. The application is only to be completed online.
  2. Develop your essay.  It should have at least three, 3-sentence paragraphs.  Make your responses fit within the space provided.
  3. Proofread your application thoroughly before sending it.
  4. You may apply for as many scholarships as you wish, though there are 2 that are designed for CT: the BBV Renaissance Society and the Mike Kompaniez Scholarship.
  5. You may only receive one scholarship, no matter how many you apply for.
  6. If you only apply for one scholarship, your chances of receiving one are much smaller than if you were to apply for many or all scholarships.
  7. If you are equally qualified for two scholarships, trust the committee to award you the best scholarship for which you are qualified.
  8. You will not be granted a scholarship that you don’t apply for, no matter how well you fit.
  9. If you spend 8 hours filling out the application and you are awarded a $1,000 scholarship, which is a return of $125 per hour.  Is that worth 8 hours of work? Can you earn $125 per hour anywhere else?
  10. You need 1 letter of recommendation.  Decide who you wish to write it TODAY and ask for it TODAY.  The letter is the single most important part of your application over which you do not have absolute control.
  11. It is okay to write out a “brag sheet” which outlines your accomplishments for the person writing your letter. It also might speed up the process of getting the letter.
  12. You may NOT ask a relative, either blood or by marriage, for a letter of recommendation.
  13. Remember that most likely, the only way that the scholarship committee members will know anything about you is from your essays and letter of recommendation.  Make sure that you portray yourself well. Do not use cellphone language and abbreviations, use proper English, spellings, and sentence structure.
  14. Plan to turn in your application early.  If it is late, it will not be accepted.
  15. Don’t say no to yourself, let us say no to you.
